Check. This. Out.

Soon there will be high quality cardboard versions of Jessica Alba and Wesley Snipes to flip on our kitchen tables. I kid you not.

We have breaking news.

Upper Deck will release the Marvel Superstars TCG, a new game based on the Marvel Universe as envisioned by the movies, in February. This will be the first time that the movies, including Iron Man, Hulk, Fantastic Four, the X-Men Trilogy, the Blade Trilogy and others, will interact with each other in a Marvel game.

A Starter Deck will be the first release, followed a few weeks later by the Booster Packs. Approximately 300 cards will be released in the first set.

Each player chooses to become a classic Marvel hero or villain, then constructs a team to defeat the opponent.

Upper Deck will be hosting demos using a beta version of the game at Gen Con this week.

This is a shock. It is the most thrilling curveball I can imagine for the future funfest to be called the Marvel Superstars Trading Card Game. My heart just jumped out of my chest and landed on the Silver Surfer’s board, only to be grabbed by Anna Paquin and absorbed into nothingness.

What. A. Stunner.

Like Two Squirrels In Love.

scratgirlfriend

(Scrat and Scratte copyright 20th Century Fox.)

Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs features the one character who keeps me flocking to the franchise. Scrat is back, and this time his temperature rises exponentially. As you can see, he has a new love interest. Check the direction of his eyes. This is a totally different game.

I will not spoil the romance further, you must see it for yourself. You might be able to guess the rest, especially when you remember that Squirrel Girl never fails when she sets her mind to something. Enjoy!

Best real-life Doreen Green I have ever seen, but with Watchmen? Talk about contrasting styles. Cah-razy.

Thursday Thirteen: Ultimate Squirrel Girl Continued.

squirrel-girl-beach-party

Squirrel Girl will appear in a cameo role in the upcoming Deadpool movie. That’s the rumor. A little tree rodent whispered it in my ear, and I am announcing it first here.

As you can see by the GLI Summer Fun Spectacular, Deadpool and Squirrel Girl are fast friends. In fact, Deadpool has admitted to wearing Squirrel Girl underoos.

Today, however, we are looking back at Squirrel Girl’s first appearance.

Just in case you weren’t here two weeks ago for the first half, this is from the Ultimate Squirrel Girl Review by Rainer. The second part gets all quizzical. Wonderfully nutty stuff.

1. Is that Steve Ditko mocking Marvel comics?

2. He seems to take great delight in it.

3. Like Tobe Hooper makes fun of yuppies in Poltergeist.

4. Doom’s defeat is among the most bizarre.

5. Especially for one of the more regal characters in the Marvel Universe.

6. Who is Squirrel Girl representing?

7. Who is the audience for this character?

8. This was published in Marvel Super-Heroes #8, a publication where Marvel dumped Library stories, back-up material in case some other story was over the deadline.

9. This could have been commissioned at any time, even the seventies or eighties.

10. My guess would be the early latter, based on the inking style.

11. It was published in 1992.

12. 1992, a year in the decade of image, foil comics, nauseatingly “realistic”art and grungy heroes.

13. Can you imagine some kid who loves Spawn or Dark Knight picking this up? His mind would be blown away. It truly looks like a dinosaur come back to live, preserved youthfully in a tar pit. Another pillar of insanity for this bizarre comic.

And yet, despite all the shock inducing elements of the story, it remains undeniably sweet. It has two levels, two worlds, again like Hooper. It’s beautifully drawn, the interaction between them is lovingly done (and lovingly one-sided) and it really makes me laugh, and realize that life really is a carnival. It also feels meta, in a good way. Iron Man plays the sturdy, veteran thinking he’s seen it all (drolly comparing Squirrel Girl to all the other heroes) like the reader, but he is jerked under the rug as much as us. In any case it is certainly one of the few times where when a character says he doesn’t think anyone will believe it, and we agree with him.

It’s genuinely astounding (a sense of wonder fills me when I read this), the art is some of the best I have ever seen, and it takes you on a bad trip, something akin to Lifeforce or Funhouse. I’ve hope you enjoyed this comic book, it truly represent the weirdness that only this medium can bring. Most serious minded comic fans aiming for respectably will no doubt raise their nose at such a thing. Fine, let them. They have their grungy and dreadfully serious movies to console them, and I have merriment with this little gem.

Watchmen Easter Egg!

watchmeneasteregg

(Easter-colored Watchmen squid by Timberwolf0316.)

A couple days ago, we spoiled the squid-version original comic book ending of Watchmen. Today we reveal it’s subliminal presence in the movie.

You don’t have to take my word for it, shamilton777 dropped it in the comments:

Walter wrote – “When they are scanning the files in the movie, the name of the plan is apparently S.Q.U.I.D.”

The SQUID Acronym also appears in the scene when Dr. Manhattan is videoconferencing with Veidt and transports the Bomb device to Antarctica. (This is the end of the weird multiple hand scene.)

Look at the TV behind Veidt and you’ll see it for a split second. It stands for (something like) Sub Quantum Unifying Intrinsic Device…

And when I caught it during my second viewing of the movie I laughed out loud.

So there you have it.  The giant alien squid who unifies the world has been given a wink and a nod in the film.

Good times.

More Watchmen Trading Cards.

rorschach1

Again, these cards are a figment of lastchance’s imagination. They exist in virtual reality, just like the Watchmen movie that no one ever thought could be filmed. Oh yeah, that is now real. From the sound of the response after the first weekend, the film is very successful. Reviews are mixed, as always, and the $55 million first weekend box office seems to be right on the borderline of blockbuster and bust. We shall see if the movie is deemed a big winner in the long run, in the meantime you can groove on some spectacular imaginary cardboard, including the missing squid! Enjoy.
